HOW YOU CAN HELP OTHERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY TODAY
COVID-19 is in our communities now, and of course there are plenty of valuable resources you can read, or television reports you can watch to understand how it's affecting all of us.
Everyone should definitely stay informed and practice the social distancing measures recommended, however there are also some actions we can take to help those in our communities who are most vulnerable right now.
One thing we can not stress enough though is to look out for your neighbours. Reach out to any seniors you may know and check in on them. Do they need supplies? Are they stocked up? Do they need someone to bring them medicines or groceries? Call them and touch base.
We've launched our own COMMUNITY CONTEST on Instagram to help local businesses in need.
Here are some other things we’ve compiled that you can do right now to support those in your community:
1. Order Takeout or Delivery
Many of our favourite restaurants have had to close their doors, but many still offer takeout or delivery services. Do what you can to support these businesses by ordering out – it helps the staff and the delivery drivers!
2. Buy Gift Cards
Help out small businesses buy buying gift cards. They do a great job of injecting immediate revenue into these shops now and you can use it later when things normalize.
3. Be Polite
In many cases, businesses that are still operating are doing so at dramatically reduced capacity. Your wait times may be longer, some items may be out of stock, but know that any business operating today is doing their best to meet your needs so try to cut them a little slack.
4. Say Thank You
Say thank you to the employees who are still working day after day through this crisis. A simple thank you can go a long way.
Some other areas with major needs include:
Canadian Blood Services has an urgent need for blood donations because of the outbreak. It’s reiterating that donating blood in Canada is safe and that there are robust cleaning and infection-control measures in place to protect all donors, staff and volunteers. To book an appointment call 1-888-2-DONATE.
Give to Food Banks and Delivery Services:
The Mississauga Food Bank is asking for food and cash donations. Please make a financial donation to The Mississauga Food Bank today. They are seeking $840,000 to keep the shelves stocked during this crisis – $360,000 more than anticipated.
Pet Shelter Donations:
Many shelters are overwhelmed right now without the benefit of foster homes for animals. They need your assistance. Drop off any pet food items or cash at your local shelter.
