The GTA has placed a bid to be the home of Amazon’s newest North American headquarters, and the Halton region is part of it.
The U.S. based tech giant currently has one head office in Seattle, Washington but their plans to expand could bring their second location to Canada, and even the GTA.
With the success of the online retailer making headlines recently it’s no surprise that they are looking to expand their offices across the continent. Weeks ago Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, was declared to have claimed the top spot as wealthiest person on earth. His $94 billion fortune surpassing that of Microsoft’s Bill Gates. This news came shortly after the announcement that Amazon had agreed on a deal to purchase the grocery store chain Whole Foods for approximately $14 billion.
A presence from Amazon in the GTA would add to the metro area’s growing tech sector. The news of a potential Toronto based Amazon head office comes in the wake of the announcement that a high-tech neighbourhood will soon be built on Toronto’s Waterfront by a sister company of Google.
Halton joined Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Durham, and York on the bid for the headquarters with three potential sites: Milton’s Derry Green Business Park; Trafalgar Road and the 407 in Oakville; and the Bronte Meadows employment area in Burlington.
In total Amazon received 238 bids from cities across the Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The city that wins the bid will likely see significant increases in real estate development and prices.
